Day 20 Know Your Identity

Branch Staton

Response Commentary to corresponding entry from the Devotional "Man of Purpose and Power" by Dr. Myles Munroe.

It's important to reflect on what we should do, and when we should do it. Looking in Mark chapter one, Jesus was certainly physically exhausted before he went to sleep at Simon and Andrews’s house. But He awoke so much earlier than the rest that they had to search for Him when He departed to find solitude with the Father. When about our Father's business, spiritual restoration can meet our needs for physical restoration (in this case Christ’s example shows this to be true). We should not carry this to an extreme, however, as we do not see Christ do so - but we cannot make the excuse of fatigue for not meeting with the Lord, or for not consulting with Him on His purposes for us. If I'm tired, or irritable, that’s no excuse for not consulting with the Lord. It is especially then that I should be meeting with Him! Christ sought solitude. To do so he had to rise “a great while before the day.” OK, if that's what He did, then so will I. In Isaiah 11:1-5, The prophecy of the Branch of Jesse declares that “the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.” If I pray for Christlikeness, I can pray for these attributes of God. You aren't fulfilling your purpose until you can hear the voice of God and affirm His word in your life. When you know the Lord, His truth dwells in you. (John 14:17) You cannot affirm God's word in your life while not studying the Bible as well as you can while studying. To be in God's Word is to be in God's presence.
