Day 69 A Protective Boundary

Branch Staton

Response Commentary to corresponding entry from the Devotional "Man of Purpose and Power" by Dr. Myles Munroe.

Men are often referred to as “having a primal instinct, urges, or drive.” That drive usually refers to sex. Whether properly and patiently subdued, or “saved for marriage,” when the time comes in a man's life that his primal drive is at its peak, wise counsel suggests it is time for him to settle down and get married. While you won't find those specific words in the Bible, what this wisdom of settling down really suggests, is a Biblical principle of benefit to men and women. The concept of settling down means that the primal urges for sex, untamed, unguarded, unbridled, would find a home where they are no longer a force of nature nearly impossible to control. Instead, they become harnessed into the covenant of marriage, where they have no need to lack constraint. Because the instinct that formerly lacked security or would seek validation in the affirmations of “manly prowess,” can now be constantly and permanently validated and secured in the love of a marriage partner. Marriage provides validation and security. Marriage provides safety and boundaries for primal instincts that have no need to wander. These boundaries erode when married partners fail to properly maintain them by focusing on God and on each other (in that order). Settling down doesn't have to mean losing anything. Instead, it should mean finding the security of a partnership in which you can both be sexually fulfilled, validated, and free to achieve the purpose God created you for, without the need to entertain or submit to your primal urges.

1 Corinthians 6:12 “Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be brought under the control of anything.
